According to sources, an interview with the Princess of Wales, Diana, alleges that Prince Charles wanted a baby girl and that Prince Harry’s arrival initially disappointed his father.
During a meeting with the princess’s biographer Andrew Morton, the royal spoke freely about the affects of her second pregnancy. The author also included transcripts of their uncensored conversation in the recent re-release of Diana: Her True Story – In Her Own Words.
According to the princess, Prince Harry’s birth on September, was the initial start of the downfall. “Charles and I were very, very close to each other the six weeks before Harry was born, the closest we’ve ever, ever been and ever will be,” she recalled. “Then, suddenly, as Harry was born, it just went bang, our marriage. The whole thing went down the drain.”
Though, Princess Diana had already seen the baby’s sex, she did not tell her husband as he had “always” hoped for a daughter. “He wanted two children and he wanted a girl,” she added. By keeping this piece of information a secret until the delivery, the letdown came as a complete surprise. She alleges her husband’s initial reaction was, “Oh God, it’s a boy,” followed by, “and he’s even got red hair.”
However, the couple was quick to agree on his name. In the event of two boys, they had decided to go with William and Henry. According to the princess, Prince Charles “loved the nursery life,” however, the birth of the second child marked a turning point in their marriage. She told Morton that after Harry’s birth, “something inside me closed off,” and “by then, I knew Charles had gone back to his lady,” Diana said.
Though a new baby brings with it its own ups and downs, the princess later attributed the couple’s eventual split to the extramarital affair and not their second son. “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” she famously said in her 1995 BBC interview. The two eventually separated in 1992 before divorcing in 1996.
